LEED vs. BREEAM – how do I choose?LEED vs. BREEAM – how do I choose?

If you’ve read our previous blog posts on this topic (and if you haven’t, you can find them here) you will already know that there are two major green building certifications in the world: LEED and BREEAM. But what is the difference between the two systems and what is most beneficial for your project?

Sustainable buildings

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) have one thing in common. They are both issued for green buildings and the idea is to actively promote a more sustainable society. However, the process from design to certified building looks rather different for the two systems.

A steadier path toward certification or greater design freedom

BREEAM is recognized as the stricter of the two systems. It has a number of guidelines and you are supported by a licensed assessor who will guide you through the design process. LEED allows for greater design freedom, but the process toward certification might require more paperwork on the part of the designers and architects.

There is no right or wrong. Rather, it’s a matter of how you would like to handle the process.
