So what exactly is a BIM object?

The short answer is that it’s an object – or a collection of data – that contains Building Information Modeling. But there’s much more to BIM than that.

BIM describes each product or component in 2D or 3D. BIM data can also include EAN-codes, U-values, dimensions, environmental and sustainability information, along with brand information such as logos and product names.

Together, these data define the geometries and physical characteristics of each building component, so you can place it in your design just as you would place the product or component itself in real life.

Fixed parameters for reliable design

There are two main types of object:

  • Component – building products that are fixed geometrical shapes such as windows, doors and boilers
  • Layered – building products without a fixed shape or size such as carpets, roofs, walls and ceilings

The main parameters of each object are fixed, just as they would be in real life, so designers, engineers and architects can generate project with almost identical specifications to the final result. So, it is little surprise then that BIM objects have been so widely adopted that more and more manufacturers now produce their catalogs in BIM format. And ASSA ABLOY have the biggest library of BIM objects in the industry.

From automatic door solutions to fast doors and loading bay equipment, you can find the BIM objects for all of our retail entrance systems at bimobject.com
