Speed vs insulation: How to make the right decision for your building

Thankfully, there’s no need for guesswork. Insulation and speed are not mutually exclusive. The best insulation method calls for a combination of speed, thickness and the composition of the door. But the right balance depends on location and usage.

For example, during frequent use – such as food production – door speed has more influence than the inherent insulation properties. Most energy loss occurs when a door is left open.

If you expect more than 5-10 cycles per hour, a high-speed door is more suitable than a standard overhead sectional door. However, a fast overhead sectional door – a combination of insulation and speed – is another potential solution.

The type of traffic has an impact as well. Consider the primary mode of traffic – in other words, is it mainly a passage for people, vehicles or materials.

Internal vs external

As you would expect, the greater the temperature difference on either side of the door, the greater the need for a door to close quickly. Doors that lead outside are more prone to temperature change than internal rooms.

It’s important to assess the prevailing weather conditions in the area. Cold or mountainous regions need a different solution than somewhere with a mostly warm climate.

Likewise, if internal rooms maintain different climates (e.g. refrigeration), the same theory applies.

Regulations – Energy Saving Ordinance

 Not only does your facility need to meet your commercial efficiency requirements – there are official energy regulations to address.

An example is Germany’s Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV), introduced in 2002, which sets out energy performance standards for new developments as well as renovation of existing buildings.

Check with local authorities to make sure your facility specifications comply with minimum standards.
